A chance to save 20,000 lives a year

October was breast cancer awareness month, with opportunities to learn about prevention, research and treatment of breast cancer through numerous activities and initiatives around the world. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the second most common type of cancer in the world.

More than two million new cases were reported in 2018, and their number is rising, according to the latest surveys.

Medela cares deeply about this issue, and as it turns out, we have a role to play in fighting the disease. Scientific research has shown that long-term breastfeeding can reduce the risk of breast cancer. The longer women breastfeed, the less likely they are to develop breast cancer – facing a 4.3% lower risk for every twelve months of breastfeeding. At a global level, this means breastfeeding can prevent 20,000 people each year from developing breast cancer.

We walk the talk

This is why Medela strongly supports the Pink Ribbon initiative. Through a host of events and activities, Pink Ribbon helps raise public awareness about breast cancer, gives those affected courage and self-confidence, and helps significantly reduce the mortality rate through early detection. Medela has been a proud partner of Pink Ribbon Switzerland since it launched twelve years ago.

Pink Ribbon Day 2019

This year, our Medela team of 120 employees, their families and friends joined participants from all over Switzerland on the Pink Ribbon Charity Walk to support the cause. Wearing the pink ribbon and mostly pink clothes, more than 5,000 people set off on the five-kilometer walk to raise awareness for breast cancer and show all those affected that they are not alone.

In Switzerland, Pink Ribbon solidarity events such as the Charity Walk, the golf tournament and the benefit gala have raised a total of over CHF 1.5 million in recent years, helping fund important breast cancer projects.
