Milk source vs fortifier type in the NICU: what matters most for the gut microbiome?

Time to read: 2 min.

Feeding decisions in the NICU are critical—especially for very low birthweight preterm infants. Both milk source (mother’s own vs. donor milk) and fortifier type (human- vs. bovine-derived) play a role, but which factor has the greatest impact on gut health?

Join Dr. Meghan Azad for this evidence-based session that explores how these choices influence the gut microbiome, gut inflammation, and growth outcomes. You’ll gain insights from new research showing that milk source is more strongly associated with microbiome composition and inflammation than fortifier type—information that can guide feeding practices and family counseling.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe key differences between milk sources and fortifier types in NICU settings
  • Understand the importance of gut inflammation and the microbiome in very low birthweight infants
  • Differentiate the effects of milk source vs. fortifier type on these parameters

This program has been approved for 1.0 Contact Hours by the California Board of Registered Nursing (Provider #13692).
