Join us March 17, 2026, at 1:00 PM CST for an informative webinar, From Mystery to Mechanism: Understanding Low Milk Supply to Enhance Breastfeeding Outcomes. This session will be led by Prof. Donna Geddes, DMU, PostGrad Dip. (Sci), PhD, and is designed for clinicians seeking to strengthen their understanding of low milk production and its impact on breastfeeding outcomes.
Low milk supply is the most cited reason for early breastfeeding cessation, yet it remains one of the least understood aspects of human lactation physiology. This webinar will address the critical knowledge gap between the prevalence of low milk production and our limited understanding of its underlying mechanisms. Participants will explore how to define and diagnose low milk supply, examine multifactorial causes including hormonal, metabolic, anatomical, and molecular factors that impair milk synthesis, and review emerging diagnostic approaches, including milk composition biomarkers for early identification of at risk mothers.
The session will also discuss current and future opportunities for intervention, highlighting emerging molecular and hormonal treatment strategies that hold promise for enhancing milk production. This webinar aims to bridge the gap between clinical challenges and research opportunities, ultimately improving outcomes for breastfeeding mothers and their infants.
After participating in this program, learners will be able to:
1. Define and identify low milk supply using evidence based criteria and describe its prevalence as a leading cause of breastfeeding cessation.
2. Analyze the multifactorial causes of low milk production, including hormonal, anatomical, metabolic, and molecular factors affecting mammary gland function.
3. Evaluate current and future opportunities for intervention, including diagnostic biomarkers such as milk composition, hormonal, and molecular markers.
This program has been approved for 1.0 Contact Hours; provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #13692
