Medela recognizes the effect our business has on the world around us and the importance of innovation to advance sustainability and environmental stewardship. As our products and operations evolve, so does our responsibility to innovate with sustainability goals in mind. Medela’s commitment to innovation is that every new product developed at Medela must improve the lives of our customers and contribute to our sustainability goals.
"As our technology and products evolve, so does our environmental stewardship and global quality strategy."
Medela is committed to measuring and reducing emissions in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP). In 2024, we completed a comprehensive revision of our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and introduced a recalculation policy to ensure year-over-year comparability—particularly important in light of organizational changes over the past few years through our Global Operations Transformation Program.
Looking ahead, we are preparing to expand our GHG inventory to include Scope 3 emissions and to develop a detailed decarbonization roadmap.
We are working toward sourcing 50% of energy from renewable sources across all Medela-owned and operated facilities by the end of 2025. A key milestone was reached in March 2024, when our sites in Baar, Switzerland, transitioned to 100% renewable electricity generated from hydropower. In addition, heating is now provided by wood pellets, marking a significant step forward in our decarbonization journey.
Packaging and IFU Reduction Program: Our commitment to sustainability in packaging and operations led to a 37% reduction in virgin plastic across our retail packaging – surpassing our 2025 target. We achieved a 12% conversion to recycled cardboard and reduced CO₂ emissions by 331 tons through packaging and materials improvements.
Fostering Circularity and Eco-Design: At Medela, sustainability is at the heart of our innovation journey. Through a focused initiative, we embarked on a mission to identify circular opportunities. This is the pre-work for the development of Medela Cares Strategy post-2025.
