Objectives:

1. Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize the value and power of patient-families’ partnership and collaboration to help improve access to the lifesaving power of human milk for infants at risk of necrotizing enterocolitis. 

2. Upon completion, participants will be able to identify the research gaps and strategies to advance the science of human milk to protect infants from the devastating risks of necrotizing enterocolitis. 

3. Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the protective factors within mother’s own milk and pasteurized donor human milk that provide protection against NEC. This program has been approved for 2.0 Contact Hours; provider approved by the California

Dr. Bode

Dr. Bode is the Endowed Chair of Collaborative Human Milk Research and the founding director of the UC San Diego Larsson-Rosenquist Foundation Mother-Milk-Infant Center of Research Excellence (MOMI CORE). MOMI CORE's mission is to create an engine of discovery focused on understanding human milk by fostering collaborative investigation across research, education, and clinical practice to improve the health and development of infants, mothers, and people of all ages.

 

Dr. Bode is the founding director of the new UC San Diego Human Milk Institute (HMI) with the mission to transform the approach to lifelong health for all people through human milk. HMI envisions a future where human milk is the first and critical foundation for human life and equitable access to better health for the global community.

 

Dr. Bode has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles on human milk oligosaccharides, and in 2022, he ranked in the top 0.1% of most highly cited scientists in the world.

Jennifer Canvasser

Jennifer Canvasser founded the Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) Society after the tragic loss of her son, Micah, to complications of the disease.

 

Through Jennifer’s leadership, the NEC Society has become the world’s leading NEC-focused nonprofit organization. Jennifer completed her undergraduate studies at UCLA, earned her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Southern California, and is currently a doctoral student in sociology at UC Davis. Jennifer serves as an expert panelist for the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative and served as an advisor for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) for 3 years. She has served as the project lead on three PCORI Engagement Awards as well as the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s Rare As One Network and Patient-Partnered Research Collaboration.

 

Jennifer has completed 14 marathons, donated over 5,000 ounces of breast milk to HMBANA milk banks, and authored the storybook for bereaved families, Forever Our Little One.
