More milk, more comfort, clinically proven
Medela’s disposable pump sets for Symphony® featuring the oval breast shields with wider 105º opening angle are clinically proven to enable the delivery of more milk and provide more comfort to mothers.*1. They can be used straight out of the packaging, no need to clean prior to first use. Medela’s disposable pump sets are available in 4 sizes, including size S (21 mm).
Medela’s disposable pump sets for Symphony® featuring its innovative oval breast shields with wider 105º opening angle are especially designed to provide more milk and more comfort.*1 Mothers pumping with the oval 105° design breast shields obtain 11 % more milk after 15 minutes compared to the standard design.1 They also showed a 4 % improvement in breast drainage1 –significant, as a key principle of maintaining milk production is to drain the breast well.2 This improves the chances of infants receiving an exclusive human milk diet.
The disposable hospital pump sets for Symphony® are intended to be used by a single user. Depending on local availability, Medela offers Ready-to-Use One-Day pump sets and Sterile Single-Use pump sets in four different breast shield sizes (S: 21 mm, M: 24 mm, L: 27 mm and XL: 30 mm). Pumping with the right breast shield size is essential to optimise milk flow. Use Medela's breast shield sizing guide to determine the optimal size.
The detachable shield provides ease of use and supports convenient hands-free pumping with the use of a pumping bra.
Medela recommends double pumping. Double pumping enables mothers to express 18% more milk with a higher energy content, all in half the time.** 3
Ready-to-Use One-Day pump set

Why did you change the breast shield to the oval shape with 105° opening angle?
By observing pumping mothers, Medela researchers noted a discrepancy between the contours of lactating breasts and the shape of a round, standard 90° angle breast shield. They discovered that traditional 90° shields may cause localised breast tissue compression, potentially reducing milk flow.5
Using our unique database of 3D scans of different lactating breasts, we developed a new groundbreaking breast shield design and demonstrated its benefits in clinical studies:
New 105° opening angle reduces compression points on the breast, and increases comfort and efficiency.1,5-7
Oval shield shape supports a good seal and fit across diverse breast shapes and sizes.1,7
The new breast shield is oval. Does this mean it should be positioned in a certain way to be most effective?
There is no wrong way to position the oval breast shield on your breast. Simply rotate the oval shape to find the most comfortable position for you.

What are the advantages of a detachable shield:
The detachable shield makes it easy for mothers to clean the set after use. It provides ease of use and supports hands-free pumping. The shield can easily be placed in a pumping bra or bustier first and then placed on the connector piece of the set. The detachable shield also makes it easier to collect colostrum from the connector piece.
Why is it important that Medela’s disposable pump sets and Symphony® are verified and validated as a complete system?
The Symphony® breast pump is part of an overall system and may only be used in conjunction with the associated original products according to the Instructions for Use and recommendation of Medela. To avoid health risks and reduce risk of injury the user is instructed not to use accessories not recommended by Medela, as this may cause hazards. Accessories and spare parts that are offered by third parties and therefore have no relationship with Medela are not considered nor tested in the validation and verification process. By using non-Medela parts with the Symphony breast pump, you are creating a new medical device system, which is not approved by any legal authority.
