How do the Hands-free Collection Cups work?

The Hands-free Collection Cups provide users the possibility of hands-free pumping while maintaining Medela’s valued performance. Vacuum is applied to the breast by means of a tubing connection to the Symphony® breast pump. The air flow between the pump and the hands-free cups generates a vacuum that is applied to the breast for milk expression. The milk is then collected within the cup and can be poured from the cup into a bottle or storage bag at the end of the pumping session. The Hands-free Collection Cups are not intended to be used for milk storage.

How much milk do the Hands-free Collection Cups hold?

Each Hands-free collection cup can hold up to 150ml / 5oz breast milk.

How do the Hands-free Collection Cups hold on to the breast?

The Hands-free Collection Cups are placed on the breast inside the mom’s bra. The fit of the bra and vacuum generated from the pump creates a seal that allows the cups to stay in place while pumping and collecting milk. How can I connect the Hands-free Collection Cups to my Symphony® pump?

The Hands-free Collection Cups attach to the Symphony® pump through a tubing connector. The collection cups double pump set includes a tubing that easily connects to the pump.

1. Connect the flat ends of the tubing to the Cups

2. Open the lid of the Symphony pump by pressing the oval button on the top and lift the handle

3. Position the Symphony® cap firmly on the breast pump membrane to form a seal

4. Gently press down until you hear the distinct “click”

5. Center the tubing connector in the recess in the pump housing

6. Close the lid of the Symphony® pump After the tubing is connected to the Symphony® pump, you can start the pump to start with INITIATE or MAINTAIN program, depending on your needs. For full instructions about how to connect the tubing or to start the pump programs, please read the Instructions for use leaflet that is available in the Double pump set.

How do I select the correct breast shield size?

Select the breast shield size by measuring the diameter of your nipple. It is best to select the breast shield size that is slightly larger than your nipple. The 21mm size is for smaller or up to 17mm nipple diameter. The 24mm size is for larger than 17mm up to 20mm nipple diameter. The 27mm size is for larger than 20mm nipple diameter. -Visit www.medela.com/fittingguide, or if you are still unsure that you selected the correct size, see a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist.

asset_image

I use an 18 mm breast shield, is there an 18 mm Hands-free Collection cup?

Unfortunately not, 18mm size is not available for the Hands-free Collection Cups. Available sizes for breast shields are 21mm, 24mm & 27mm.

When finished pumping, how can I drain the milk from the tunnel into the cups?

To avoid milk spilling out of the breast shield tunnel, when finished pumping, keep the pump running and slightly lean forward to ensure all milk from the nipple tunnel enters the milk collection cups. Once there is no more milk in the tunnel stop the Symphony® breast pump by pressing the start or pause button.

How can I store the Hands-free Collection Cups for long-term?

Before long-term storage, disassemble and disinfect all parts (except for the tubing and Symphony cap). All parts should be dried before storing long-term. Do not store the Hands-free Collection Cups in their assembled state over an extended period of time. You can also watch the how to store video for more detailed instructions.

How do you assemble the Hands-free Collection Cups?

Step 1. Attach the valve to the front of the breast shield. Align disc and press around the edges to secure.

Step 2. Insert the pouring spout into the opening on shield

Step 3. Press the shell and breast shield tightly together

You can also watch the how to assemble video for more detailed instructions.

How do I pour milk out of the Hands-free Collection Cups into a storage bottle or storage bag?

The Hands-free Collection Cups feature a pouring spout on the top through which milk can be easily poured into a milk storage bottle or storage bag.

During a pumping session how can I tell if I'm filling up the cups too much?

The scale on the outer shell of the transparent collection cups gives an approx. indication of the volume collected during your pumping session.

Are the Hands-free Collection Cups compatible with pumps from other brands?

The Hands-free Collection Cups are not compatible with pumps from other brands.

New: Can I use my Symphony® Hands-free Collection Cups with Medela personal use pumps?

Unfortunately not, you need to buy the Hands-free Collection Cups set that is compatible with your preferred Personal use pump.

New: Can I use my Freestyle Collection Cups that I already have with the Symphony pump?

Unfortunately not, you need to buy the Hands-free Collection Cups rental set that is compatible with the Symphony® pump.

Are Hands-free Collection Cups hospital-grade (multi-user)?

The Hands-free Collection Cups are not multi-user products which are designed to be autoclaved or sterilised as per hospital guidelines. The Hands-free Collection Cups are intended for personal use only and can be safely washed and disinfected as per normal personal pump kit disinfecting and washing guidelines.

Are the Symphony Hands-free Collection Cups and PersonalFit Plus bottle kit equivalent?

The traditional bottles and the Hands-free Collection Cups offer unique advantages for the pumping mums allowing mums the freedom to choose which pumping kit is right for them. Medela Hands-free Collection Cups have been developed with a unique anatomic shape to offer:

• Discreet in-bra pumping

• High flexibility at-home

• Ease to assemble and clean in 3 pieces

Medela PersonalFit™ PLUS double pump sets are designed to offer a personalised experience for mom offering precision and control:

• Easy to track milk output and massage breast

• Clearly visible for nipple alignment

• Easy to assemble and use

How long do you have to pump with Hands-free Collection Cups?

Pumping duration is dependent on each user. With the Hands-free Collection Cups users can expect to pump for about the same duration as with the Symphony® PersonalFit PLUS™ double pump set. It is important to note that it could be potentially easier for a user to forget how long they have been using in-bra wearable pump when multi-tasking. It is advised not to overstimulate the breasts and prolong use of the breast pump collection cups unnecessarily.

Is double pumping more effective?

Double pumping both breasts together compared to single pumping (one breast at a time) has been shown to stimulate an additional milk ejection (milk let-down) which on average results in 18% more milk pumped over a 15-minute pumping duration. It also means that the milk has a higher fat and calorie content and there is better breast drainage.

Can I exclusively pump with the Symphony® Hands-free Collection Cups?

Yes, you can exclusively pump using the Hands-free Collection Cups, especially if you are not receiving specific lactation consultant support and your milk supply is well-established. Moms who opt for the Collection Cups for exclusive use appreciate the hands-free convenience, the ability to multitask, and the flexibility they offer at home.

Do Hands-free Collection Cups cause mastitis?

It is important when using Hands-free Collection Cups for pumping that mum removes the pump and collection cups as soon as they have finished the pumping session. It is advised that the breast pump cups are used for the same average time as when pumping with classic bottle pump kit, therefore when used in the same way and for the same duration the risk of mastitis would not differ. It is important to note that it could be potentially easier for a user to forget how long they have been using in-bra collection cups when multi-tasking. It is therefore advised to not overstimulate the breasts and prolong use of the collection cups and pump unnecessarily.

Do wearable breast pump cups cause more soreness?

As with all breast shields, they come in to contact with the breast and nipple area, therefore it is important to have the right fit to prevent any soreness. The right size of breast shield (the funnel-shaped part that fits over your breast) is an essential part of optimal milk flow during pumping as well as to help obtain maximum comfort.

The breast shield tunnel should surround your nipple closely but leave enough space for it to move back and forth freely without rubbing. It shouldn’t chafe or pull too much of your areola (the darker area around the nipple), or the breast skin around it, into the tunnel as you pump. A badly fitting breast shield can reduce the amount of milk you express, which is why Medela makes breast shields in several different sizes.

The tunnel diameter on the Hands-free Collection Cups is sized the same as the Medela PersonalFit Flex™ and PersonalFit PLUS™ breast shields from all the pumps in the range. Therefore, with correct sizing and use of the Hands-free Collection Cups it should support a comfortable pumping experience.

Medela offers a breast shield sizing guide which applies to PersonalFit Flex™, PersonalFit PLUS™ breast shields and the Hands-free Collection Cups www.medela.com/fittingguide Seek advice and support from your lactation consultant / breastfeeding specialist if you experience discomfort or soreness when pumping.

Can Hands-free Collection Cups cause clogged / plugged ducts?

As with all breast pumps, it is important to use it correctly; ensuring the correct sized breast shield or collection cup is used. The correct size means that the nipple or areola is not pinched during pumping sessions. Correct sizing also ensures optimal milk flow.

If you have a history of blocked ducts or mastitis it is recommended that you seek support from a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist. Other points to be aware of when pumping to prevent clogged or plugged ducts:

• When sizing for the right breast shield size it is good to know that size can also be dependent on breast tissue and skin elasticity. This is why Medela recommends confirming you’ve chosen the correct size. For more information on sizing your nipple for the correct sized breast shield, see our question “How do I select the correct breast shield size?“

• It is also important to consider whether you are wearing the correctly sized nursing bra. If any part of the bra is pressing or digging into your breast tissue it could lead to an increased chance of blocked ducts. A correctly sized bra which puts no extra pressure on your breast is important to prevent this. Remember, your breasts may grow during pregnancy but also could keep changing size for up to 4 weeks after you have given birth. Watch and feel for any areas of compression or discomfort in these early weeks and months.

Do you have to be sitting or can you be more active?

The Symphony Hands-free Collection Cups (or wearable breast pump cups) are great for relaxing back and taking a moment when pumping with the Symphony breast pump. Whether you choose to pump while sitting, tending to your baby, or multi-tasking, the Symphony Hands-free Collection Cups allows you flexibility, discreetness and comfort whilst giving you the hospital grade performance you expect from the Symphony breast pump. It is good to note as with all pumps, the cups are not designed to be used when leaning over completely as there is an opening (pouring spout) at the top of the cups through which milk could spill out.

Do I need a special bra to be able to use the Hands-free Collection Cups?

A special bra is not required when using the Hands-free Collection Cups. The wearable collection cups are designed to fit into most nursing bras. For the ultimate hands-free experience, check out our: Link to Keep Cool Bra / Link to 3 in 1 nursing bra.

Is it important to have a correctly sized nursing bra? In general, it is recommended to wear the right sized nursing bra for your unique breast size and shape. Remember, your breasts may grow during pregnancy but also could keep changing size for up to 4 weeks after you have given birth. Therefore, if you notice that any part of the nursing bra is pressing or digging into your breast tissue it is advised to get re-sized for a comfortable fit. A correctly sized bra which puts no extra pressure on your breast, is important to prevent any discomfort, or compression on the milk-making tissue. If you have any concerns, seek support from a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist.

When cups are full can you empty them and then keep pumping?

Yes! The Hands-free Collection Cups hold 150ml / 5oz of breastmilk each.

When the cups are full:

1. Pause the pumping by pressing the play/pause button on the display.

2. Pour the expressed milk into a breast milk-safe collection bottle or storage bag.

3. Place the Hands-free Collection Cups back in position and continue the pumping session.

Can I store milk in the collection cups between pump sessions?

No. Do not store expressed breastmilk within the cups. When a mum has finished pumping, any breast milk expressed should be poured into a milk-safe storage container, stored in the refrigerator, freezer or used immediately. For more information, see https://www.medela.com/breastfeeding/mums-journey/storing-and-thawing-breast-milk.

Can I return the Hands-free Collection Cups if I change my mind?

The Hands-free Collection Cups pump set is a single-user product, therefore for hygiene and safety reasons, they can only be used by one person. This means that once the tamper seal is broken, you will not be able to return the product to Medela or a retailer unless it is faulty. If you received a faulty or malfunctioning device, please contact the Medela customer service team to see if you are eligible for a warranty replacement.

How do I dispose the Hands-free Collection Cups?

The breast shields, outer cups, tubing, and membranes are made of plastics that are not harmful to the environment when disposed of as household waste. You can recycle or dispose of it according to local regulations.

What is the life expectancy of the Hands-free Collection Cups? Do any pieces of the Hands-Free Collection Cups need to be replaced?

The lifetime of the pump set depends on the frequency of the usage and cleaning. Therefore we recommend to replace them whenever there is any sign of wear or damage or mold. Breast shields in different sizes and membranes are sold seperately at local retailers.

What is the weight of the Hands-free Collection Cups?

Medela's Hands-free Collection Cups are amongst the lightest available in the market today weighing in at only 76g / 2.6oz each cup. Will Medela continue to sell the current Symphony PersonalFit PLUS™ breast shields & connectors? Yes, Symphony PersonalFit PLUS™ breast shields and connectors remain available. Many other Medela personal use pumps still use the connectors with bottles in their kit systems.

What is so special about anatomic design / anatomic shape?

Our anatomically shaped collection cups are uniquely designed to maximise milk expression and comfort by reducing compression of breast tissue. The cups are designed with a smooth surface and rim which flares away from the breast & supports the underside of the breast, a part of the anatomy which is extremely susceptible to compression, which houses the majority of the milk-making tissue.

How can I clean and dry the Collection Cups?

Please refer to the Hands-free Collection Cups IFU for complete cleaning instructions. You can also watch the how to store video for more detailed instructions.

Are the Hands-free Collection Cups easy to clean?

The Hands-free Collection Cups have been designed to make cleaning easy. With only three parts to clean :

1. Cup

2. Membrane

3. Breast shield

The cups are dishwasher safe on the top rack only. This excludes the tubing and the Symphony cap.

How often do I need to clean the Hands-free Collection Cups?

The Hands-free Collection Cups should be boiled before first use, washed after every use (hand wash or dishwash), and disinfected once per day (boil). Always allow all parts to completely dry on a clean towel. The Hands-free Collection Cups are not multi-user products which are designed to be autoclaved or sterilised as per hospital guidelines.

Is it dishwasher safe?

The Hands-free Collection Cups are dishwasher safe on the top rack only. This excludes the tubing and the Symphony cap. Do not clean or rinse the tubing and the Symphony® cap under any circumstances.

How can I clean and dry the tubing?

The Medela Symphony® breast pump features a closed system so milk cannot get into the tube when used as instructed. Do not clean or rinse the inside of the tubing under any circumstances. The exterior of the tubing can be wiped down with a damp cloth if dirty.

What are the hands-free Collection Cups made of?

The Cups and Shields are made of polypropylene (PP) and the membrane is made with silicone.

Are the hands-free collection cups and breast shields recyclable?

Yes, your Collection cups and breast shield can be recycled. At the moment, Medela doesn't offer recycle program globally. Please find the detailed material information in IFU and follow local regulation for disposal.

(when to switch from initiate to maintain: once 20ml or more is expressed from both breasts in a pumping session, & when breast fullness if felt OR switch not later than day 6 post birth).

I am using the highest vacuum setting but feel that I get stronger vacuum with my Symphony PersonalFit PLUS kit than the Symphony® Hands-free Collection Cups

It may happen that the PersonalFit PLUS™ double pump set feels better for you in comparison with the Collection Cups. Always it depends on what you are looking for. If you want to express with more precision and control (ie massaging the breast, nipple alignment, watching milk flow etc) the PersonalFit PLUS™ rental set is more suitable for you, while if you are seeking for comfort, Medela hands-free Collection Cups allow flexibility and ability to multitask at home, with its anatomic design.

What does Medela define as multi-task and what does that mean for me?

The ability to multitask is having flexibility at home, being able to hold your baby while pumping, reading, working from your laptop or socialising while discreetly pumping. According to a recent usage study Medela did with 55 mothers in the US, 100 % of mothers confirmed Cups give them freedom to multitask.

Has Medela done any testing to validate using Hands-free Collection kits with the Symphony pump?

Yes, Medela has tested the use of Cups with Symphony® with 55 mothers in the US in December 2024 and over 83% stated that would continue using the Cups, with half of them using it exclusively. 93% were satisfied with the level of Comfort while 94% found the Cups easy to assemble.

Are Symphony Hamds-free Collection Cups classified as a Medical Device?

Yes, they are medical devices as accessories for the Symphony® breast pump which is classified as a medical device in EU

When should I use Symphony's INIITIATE program and should I switch to the MAINTAIN program?

INITIATE program should be used from birth when initiating lactation while MAINTAIN program should be used to build and maintain supply once the milk has "come in". (when to switch from initiate to maintain: once 20ml or more is expressed from both breasts in a pumping session, & when breast fullness if felt OR switch not later than day 6 post birth). You can watch the how to start INITIATE program video and how to start MAINTAIN program video for more detailed advice.
